Lentz wins a close split decision to kick off UFC 123

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Nick Lentz started out UFC 123 with controversy, beating Tyson Griffin in a split decision, 29-28, 27-30 and 29-28 at the Palace of Auburn Hills in suburban Detroit on Saturday.

Griffin and Lentz switched control often in the first round, with Lentz striking first with a takedown, and then Griffin reversing position and driving Lentz in the fence for much of the round. They then exchanged blows during the final minute of the round, with Lentz getting the better of striking. Griffin finished the round with an ineffective slam of Lentz.

Their stand-up drew boos from the crowd in suburban Detroit early in the second round, but that seemed to spur them on. They started to exchange more punches and kicks, until Griffin took down Lentz with about a minute and a half left in the round. Griffin tried for ground and pound but had trouble getting anything going.

Griffin wobbled Lentz to start the third and final round, and followed that up with several unanswered punches. Lentz tried for a takedown to stop the onslaught, but Griffin ended up on top. With a profusely bleeding face, Lentz was able to reverse position with a slam of Griffin. He tried for a chicken wing submission, but Griffin somehow got out of it and remained in control for the rest of the round.

The result elicited loud boos from the crowd, who were surprised that Griffin did not win. His record falls to 14-5 while Lentz's improves to 21-4.

State of the Strikeforce Heavyweights

by Michael David SmithThe list of names in Strikeforce's heavyweight division is undeniably impressive: Former No. 1 fighter in the world Fedor Emelianenko. The man who beat him, Fabricio Werdum. Former UFC heavyweight champions Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett. Hot prospects Daniel Cormier and Shane del Rosario. And the champion, K-1 wrecking machine Alistair Overeem.

The biggest question facing Strikeforce is whether it can actually get all of those fighters -- and Antonio Silva and Brett Rogers and Lavar Johnson and so on -- into the cage, fighting each other. The heavyweight talent is there. The heavyweight fights came all too infrequently in 2010, and as we take a look below at the state of Strikeforce's heavyweight division, we offer some suggestions on what should happen in 2011.

State of the Strikeforce Light Heavyweights

by Michael David SmithStrikeforce's light heavyweight title has been held by three different fighters this year, and two more fighters will vie for the right to fight for the belt in the main event of the promotion's December 4 show. Although the Strikeforce light heavyweight division doesn't have the depth of the UFC, it does have several good fighters and the potential for a bunch of exciting fights over the next year.

So can Strikeforce make those fights happen? If they can, which fights should they book first? And who will be the Strikeforce light heavyweight champion in a year's time? We answer those questions in our state of the Strikeforce light heavyweight division, below.

Toby Imada Credits Judo for Shoot Boxing Win Over Andy Souwer

Despite Andy Souwer's injury claims, Toby Imada's defeat of the Shoot Boxing great in Imada's debut exceeded all expectations, including his own.

"This was a huge achievement for me. A big accomplishment. It's the first time I've competed in Shoot Boxing, especially with this calibre of fighters. It's completely new to me. I won my first match and it was a good fight and I was very impressed with myself. And Andy Souwer... well, I didn't expect it but this is what I do. I go out and I fight and I don't give up," Imada stated post fight.

Imada wouldn't be at the top of the list for successful kickboxing converts as he is primarily a grappler but with Shoot Boxing allowing throws and standing submissions, Imada believes his grappling roots gave him the edge.

Video: Pat Barry Uses Leg Kicks to Keep Goodridge Off Balance

Everybody loves seeing leg kicks used effectively in MMA fights. It’s even better when you can clearly tell they hurt. Case in point: Pat Barry vs. Gary Goodridge in a K-1 World Grand Prix 2007 showdown. The fight may be over in 67 seconds, but the few strikes landed by Barry clearly hurt Goodridge. Since [...]

With "the incident" behind, Paul Daley looks for short fight in Strikeforce debut

British slugger Paul Daley has a new name for the post-fight suckerpunch of Josh Koscheck that led to his release from the UFC: "the incident."

But seven months after the unfortunate display of poor sportsmanship, the often brash Daley insists he's moved beyond the emotion-filled antics of his previous contests.

Instead, as Daley completes his preparation for an upcoming bout with fellow striker Scott Smith at next weekend's "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" event, the knockout artist said he's walking into the cage both humbled and respectful of his foe.

Strikeforce boss: Smith-Daley, Lawler-Lindland also have title implications

In addition to the night's headliner, two other bouts from next week's "Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Babalu" event could propel the winner to a title shot.

The Dec. 4 show, which airs on Showtime from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, features a likely No. 1 contender's bout between middleweights Dan Henderson and Renato "Babalu" Sobral.

But Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said welterweights Paul Daley vs. Scott Smith and middleweights Matt Lindland vs. Robbie also could have title implications.

Munoz and Simpson: Fighters put friendship aside at UFC 123

Mark Munoz and Aaron Simpson are remarkably similar. Both have strong wrestling pedigrees: Munoz was a national champion at Oklahoma St. while Simpson was an All-American at Arizona St. They both coached in the wrestling Pac-10. Munoz helped UC-Davis to their first national champion, and Simpson was key to success at both Arizona St. and Cal Tech. They both got into the MMA game relatively late, but won right from the start. Munoz is 8-2 and Simpson is 7-1.

They are old friends, and even helped each other get into MMA when coaching wrestling. Check the 3:30 point in the video to hear how Simpson and Munoz discussed getting into MMA while coaching at the NCAA championships in 2007 at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich.

When they fight at UFC 123 at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Mich., two remarkably similar men will have to put their friendship aside. Munoz admits that he's not looking forward to punching Simpson, but he'll find a way.

"No, I'm not. I'll try to picture somebody else's face in front of him."

UFC's Falcao says White's criticism fair, fans pay to watch scraps, not strategy

The next time UFC middleweight Maiquel Falcao steps in the octagon, one thing is certain: he won't be playing the role of unknown Brazilian.

After a controversy-filled UFC 123 win over Gerald Harris, you likely recognize Falcao as either the Brazilian robbed of a submission win, the thug that held on to a rear-naked choke too long or the bore who refused to engage in the bout's final round.

But Falcao insists he's none of those things and will shortly be known by another tag: top middleweight contender.
