Featherweight Josh Grispi not guaranteed title shot with win at UFC 125

LAS VEGAS - WEC standout turned UFC fighter Josh Grispi may not get a chance to realize a title opportunity that slipped through his fingers with the injury of featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

UFC president Dana White said today that Grispi is not guaranteed a fight with Aldo if he's victorious Saturday at UFC 125 against fellow octagon newcomer Dustin Poirier.

"He's in the mix, though," White said.

MMA Top 10 Welterweights: No End in Sight to GSP's Dominance

by Michael David SmithGeorges St. Pierre whipped Josh Koscheck for five rounds at UFC 124, bringing to 30 his streak of consecutive rounds won. Think about that: St. Pierre has fought the best of the best in the welterweight division, and although you can knock him for not finishing most of his recent fights, even the wildly inconsistent judges we have in MMA these days couldn't find a reason to score a single round against him over 30 rounds of action.

So when does that change? Jake Shields has dominated a whole lot of opponents himself recently, winning 15 straight fights including eight by stoppage and five by unanimous decision. But while Shields is certainly worthy of his title shot, it's extremely difficult to envision him actually beating St. Pierre, who does just about everything better than Shields. I could very easily see St. Pierre beating Shields by yet another unanimous decision, 50-45 all the way around.

And so as we rank the Top 10 welterweights in MMA, we're left wondering if any of them have what it takes to end GSP's reign.

McKee's arrived, says he's going to dial down the trash talk

Antonio McKee is a smart guy. He realized a few years back his fighting alone wasn't going to get him to the UFC, so he honed his skills on the microphone. It worked. He kept winning - he hasn't lost since 2003 - and the UFC signed the 40-year-old lightweight.

In two weeks, he'll debut at UFC 125 against Jacob Volkmann.

In this video introduction piece, McKee (25-3-2) says now that he's with the big show he won't have to play a "character" as he calls it outside the ring. Why not?

It's more important now than ever for McKee to talk his way into the mix. He doesn't have much time. He's a skilled grappler and takedown artist, but to gain the attention of the brass and more importantly new fans, McKee better use those chops.

Paul Daley, Dan Hardy, Tito Ortiz, Josh Koscheck, Michael Bisping, Anthony Johnson, Frank Mir, Matt Serra and Chael Sonnen have all earned a little extra credit and a few free passes on the rankings ladder because of their prefight media work in the past.

We feel safe in saying, McKee should provide some good prefight fodder. He just can't help it (video below - NSFW). McKee's great at hyping fights and won't be able to contain himself once he hits the ground in Las Vegas.

Cerrone punches his ticket to the UFC with win over Horodecki

Donald Cerrone has been one of the mainstays in the WEC, but with the merger of the promotion into the UFC, nothing was guaranteed. Cerrone was likely to get the invite to the big promotion but certainly didn't have room to jerk around and lose to Chris Horodecki.

He didn't. Early in the second round, Cerrone hit the deck and transitioned to a triangle choke. The veteran stayed patient with Horodecki and eventually locked on the submission hold where it was unbearable for the 23-year-old to continue at 2:43 of the second round.

Cerrone will now go from being a big fish in a little pond to a small fish in the biggest MMA pond in the sport. The 155-pound division in the UFC is extremely deep. The lanky lightweight should provide some great matchup opportunities for UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.

"The Cowboy" called out Cole Miller following the fight. Miller has a win over Cerrone's teammate Leonard Garcia.

Horodecki was very much in the fight in the first round. In spite of giving away a lot in the reach department, Horodecki was having success getting inside and landing combinations to the head and body. There were several trips to the floor, and Cerrone looked like the slicker fighter in the grappling department. Cerrone won the first round, but it was competitive.

For some reason between rounds, Horodecki's trainer Shawn Tompkins asked the fighter to grapple and get it to the ground in the second.

Horodecki listened and got it down but was almost immediately in danger, in the grips of Cerrone's long legs.

Cerrone (13-3, 6-3 WEC) moves over to UFC with the potential of being a Chris Lytle-type. The MMA veteran has won seven postfight honors during his time with UFC.

Cerrone, 27, has the same exciting, go-for-broke approach, that'll make him a big hit with his new fans over in the UFC.

Horodecki (16-3, 2-2 UFC) may have cost himself a gig with the UFC. That said, he's a young dude who probably deserves at least one more fight with Zuffa.

WEC 53 Results: Kamal Shalorus Beats Bart Palaszewski

by Michael David SmithKamal Shalorus used great wrestling and a dominant ground-and-pound display to dominate Bart Palaszewski in the first round of their fight at WEC 53, then slowed down but hung on well enough to win a split decision.

"I put all my strength into finishing him," Shalorus said of the way he slowed down after that great first round. "I will show you an exciting fight next time."

For Shalorus, the next time will be in the UFC. Palaszewski, however, may not be joining him there after the UFC absorbs the WEC.

Happy Holidays from Cagewriter

What says "Happy Holidays" more than scowling fighters? Nothing! The fine folks at Playboy did a photo shoot with UFC stars Ryan Bader, Junior dos Santos, Dana White, Vitor Belfort, Stephan Bonnar and Jon Jones. You can catch it in the January issue, which has Pam Anderson on the cover, and apparently, a nude pictorial of a Russian spy. (With the possibility of a treaty between the U.S. and Russia, she's just planning for unemployment.) You should also check out the updated Yahoo! Sports pound-for-pound rankings, and read on for some MMA poetry.

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the Octagon with care,

In hopes that St. Dana White soon would be there;

The fighters were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of bonuses danced in their heads;

When out on the Strip there arose such a sound,

Someone asked "Who is the best pound-for-pound!?"

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Thinking Silva or GSP -- they're straight cash.

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature fighter, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, how could he go?

I knew in a moment it must be Jose Aldo.

More rapid than eagles his opponents they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, Manny! now, Faber! now, Brown and Brookins!

On, Mickle! on Shoji! on, Nogueira and Swanson!

To the floor of the cage! to the canvas on the ring!

To knock you all out ain't no big thing!"

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Aldo came with a bound.

A bundle of belts he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His fists so strong, his kicks rather scary!

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

Training to fight without a single quirk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

Merry Christmas to all! And to all a good night!

UFC moves prelims to ION TV

The UFC and Spike have had a great relationship over the years. Has it changed?

Monday night, MMAjunkie broke the story that the UFC 125 prelims will air on ION Television. Fans may also see three fights instead of the normal two.

Dana White indicated that he can't guarantee all three will make it to television.

"The prelims we do air, there's only supposed to be two," White said. "Time-wise, it's impossible to pull off three if they all go to the distance. I'm going to roll the dice on this thing.

"Not only are we going to bring the prelims to the fans, but everybody has been hammering me for the Phil Baroni-Brad Tavares fight, so I'm going to do three fights. I'm going to give them that fight, too."

This is something the UFC president was hoping for.

"I always try to give the fans as much as I can give them," White said. "I love being able to give them free fights. That's always been my goal and my model with this thing since day one.

"I grew up watching free fights in TV with boxing, and I loved it. I was a huge fan. I always try to give the fans as much as I can."

The Spike relationship produced 12 seasons of "The Ultimate Fighter," 34 free Ultimate Fight Night and TUF Finale cards, and the live prelims at several recent pay-per-view events. The promotion and network seemed to have run into a snag recently.

"We're going to talk to [ION] and see what's up," White said. "This might be a regular thing.

"Listen, it's a ballsy move to go on network with prelims, but the Ion guys are the real deal. We're going to see if we can make it happen with them."

Trim and energetic Alves whips Howard at UFC 124

Thiago Alves hasn't been at his best in a long time. Tonight in Montreal, the vicious striker was in tip-top shape. It paid off. He put on a striking clinic against John Howard to pick up a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all cards in the first fight on the pay-per-view portion of UFC 124.

Alves (18-7, 10-4 UFC) is one of the top strikers in the UFC's welterweight division from a technical standpoint, but his career stalled in 2009 and 2010 because he couldn't maintain his weight. The stocky Brazilian missed weight in two of his last four fights. As a result, Alves was listless in his last fight, a one-sided loss to Jon Fitch. An angry Dana White said he was fed up and Alves would have to go middleweight.

Alves got one more chance to stay at the lower weight by changing his lifestyle. He brought in diet expert Mike Dolce. Dolce's plan clearly paid dividends. Alves was fresh for all 15 minutes. His leg kicks were devastasting.

Howard (14-6, 4-2 UFC) tried to go on the offense throughout, but Alves was too smooth for him. Alves had him timed early in the fight and Howard took a beating.

Alves also showed a decent ground game by scoring two takedowns, including a big slam in the second round. He also floored Howard in the third. Alves timed a Howard leg kick and popped him with right, straight down the pipe.

Howard has lost two straight after beginning his UFC career with four wins.

Aerts got to the final with a shocking majority decision upset over defending champion Semmy Schilt, and if the 40-year-old Aerts had won the whole tournament it would have been a great moment for longtime K-1 fans, who have long loved Aerts' fighting style in the ring and gentlemanly ways out of the ring.

In his first fight since a surprising UFC release earlier this year, Todd Duffee will meet fellow heavyweight Alistair Overeem at next week's DREAM "Dynamite!! 2010" event.

A DREAM source today told MMAjunkie.com verbal agreements are in place for the fight, though Duffee reps couldn't be reached for confirmation.

DREAM officially added Overeem to the Dec. 31 fight card on Wednesday, and Sherdog.com reported Duffee as a likely opponent.

My First Fight: Mike Pyle

If you walked up to a 175-pound fighter with no pro bouts to his credit and asked him if he wanted to fight 205-pound Quinton "Rampage" Jackson for a hundred bucks on a week's notice, chances are he'd look at you like you'd just declared yourself to be the rightful king of England.

That's today. That's the state of the fight game in 2010. But back in Memphis, Tenn. in 1999, that exact same proposal didn't seem so bad when it was put to Mike Pyle.

"I was set to fight someone in my weight class," Pyle remembers. "I was 175 pounds soaking wet, with my gi on. My opponent had gotten hurt at a jiu-jitsu tournament a week before. Why the hell he was doing a jiu-jitsu tournament a week before, I don't know, but the promoter...called me and said, 'Hey, there's a problem. Your boy got hurt, so how about Rampage?' I was like, okay, let's do it. That was all it took."

Struve keeps calm, carries onto UFC 124 TKO

Stefan Struve showed off his experience in a first-round TKO of Sean McCorkle at UFC 124 in Montreal on Saturday.

McCorkle started the fight with a slam takedown, and then moved into an immediate Kimura. Struve calmly moved towards the cage and worked his arms out from McCorkle's control, never letting McCorkle get full control. After Struve freed his arms, McCorkle maintained top control, then nearly gave up an armbar. Struve remained calm, and at the right moment reached in for a Kimura. Instead of using it to submit McCorkle, Struve turned him over and moved into full mount. He rained down punches until referee Yves Levigne stopped the bout at 3:55.

Immediately after the bout, Struve asked for cheers for McCorkle, dismissing their pre-fight trash talk as part of the job.

Though McCorkle is nine years older, Struve had the upper hand when it comes to fight experience. Struve has 25 fights under his belt, seven in the UFC, while this was just McCorkle's second UFC bout.

UFC 124 video: White talks UFC 131 and McCorkle's wedding

There was a ton of media coverage at Thursday's UFC 124 prefight press conference. Heavy.com's Megan Olivi grabbed Dana White to find out what the plans were for UFC 131 in Ontario. White said he's making sure the integrity of the event won't be compromised for ticket buyers.

The interview had its lighter moments. At 2:18, he jokes about Sean McCorkle.

Apparently, "Big Sexy" turned on the charm during an earlier interview with Heavy.

Rich Franklin On Where Is Post Fight After Parties Are: The ER

While most fighters tend to head to the bar following a big fight for an after party, former UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin, who, win or lose has been in his share of battles inside the Octagon, talks with Tapology.com about where most of his after parties have been after a night at the office:

"It's funny because I was asked by a fan once, ?Dude, where are you going to party after the fight?' I looked at him and said, ?Probably the E.R.' That's where I spend most of my after parties. Even when I win a fight-like the Chuck Liddell fight-I still spend the evening in the hospital. It does wear on you mentally. When things like the (UFC 93) eye gouge happen, which really changed the shape of that eye, you start to think about what you would do if you lost your vision. I would never be able to fight again. When I finish fighting I want to be able to do things; maybe I'll run a marathon or a triathlon or something like that. I like to go hiking; I'm an active person. All it takes is one moment in this sport for all of that to be taken away from you, so those thoughts do creep into my head sometimes."

Stevenson vs. Danzig loser could be done with UFC

Joe Stevenson and Mac Danzig are two of the best guys in the UFC. They're both former "Ultimate Fighter" champs as well. That may not mean much for the loser of tomorrow's UFC 124 fight in Montreal. According to Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole, someone's spot in the UFC could be gone after the fight.

There are less roster spots available now that the WEC's fighters have been added to the mix. Stevenson (31-11, 8-5 UFC) is coming off a loss to George Sotiropoulos and has lost two of three fights while Danzig (19-8, 3-4 UFC) has lost four of five. Both could try to drop down 10 pounds and make the featherweight limit, but that option may not be offered.

Royce Gracie In Negotiations To Fight On UFC Brazil Card

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

While this is a long shot to say the least, it?s well worth noting. We may get a chance to see UFC hall-of-famer, and MMA pioneer Royce Gracie fight once again for the UFC. This time around, it may well be in front of his home crowd in Brazil.

The UFC will be headed to Rio de Janeiro in August to host their first event on Brazilian soil in 13 years. There were plenty of Brazilian born superstars at a recent press conference held to announce the event, including Vitor Belfort, Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, Mauricio Rua, and of course, Royce Gracie.

Following the conference Royce Gracie took some time to conduct an interview with Tatame, in which he?s asked the question many are juggling themselves: Will he compete at the planned event?

A man of few words, Royce responded with a simple, ?We?re negotiating it.?

While it?s no form of official announcement, it is clear that Dana White and Joe Silva would like to see the legendary Gracie in action at the event. Gracie is a massive draw in Brazil, and an in-cage appearance from the former champion makes financial sense; it?s also something many diehard fans have been waiting to see for years.

No winter meetings necessary: UFC jumps to steal Japanese stars

Some hardcore fans are driven nuts by the fact that the UFC is trying to bury the competition. An "Evil Empire" of sorts. So it was funny this weekend to see Dana White operating like his favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox.

The Evil Empire in Beantown spent $292 million to steal Adrian Gonzalez from San Diego and land the best overall hitter on the free agent market in Carl Crawford. White didn't land Fedor Emelianenko and Alistair Overeem, but he did grab two of the biggest names from Japan in Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto and Michihiro Omigawa.

After WEC 53 this Thursday, the bantamweight and featherweight division will be playing in the big leagues. The 135 and 145 pound divisions will help sell pay-per-views with the UFC, that means there's no limit on who Zuffa can bring in to bolster the roster. Yamamoto and Omigawa are money well spent.

Omigawa, 35, is probably a longshot to get his hands on UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo, but he'll add some flair to the division. He's gone 8-2-1 since a drop to 145 pounds. He actually fought in the UFC back in 2007 and 2008, losing at 155 pounds against Matt Wiman and Thiago Tavares. In his return, the UFC gave him a stiff test. He'll debut against Chad Mendes, an excellent wrestler.

Yamamoto is the guy fans should really be excited about.

He's the rare bantamweight with legitimate one-punch knockout power, but he's not a one-dimensional fighter. Yamamoto (18-3) came close to making the Japanese Olympic wrestling team and wrestled in the U.S. His career stalled recently because of a severe knee injury and a lack of motivation.

Japanese promoters also contributed to his less than stellar attitude by feeding him easy opponents. The UFC won't do that and it should motivate him. And if Kid thought he was getting Miguel Torres or Urijah Faber right out of the gates, he got a wake up call when the promotion booked him to face Demetrious Johnson. Hardcore fans don't understand the booking, but it's a good move. Kid is unknown by 98 percent of the fans in the U.S. He needs to be built up. If he does his work and scores some impressive wins, look for him to face one of the top dogs at 135 (Torres, Faber or Joe Benavidez) by the summer or fall of 2011.

WEC 53 ratings: Final card draws 615,000 viewers, seventh-highest in company history

World Extreme Cagefighting went out with a bang in the cage, and the promotion didn't do too bad in the ratings, either.

With a pair of titles on the line in the final event in WEC history, "WEC 53: Henderson vs. Pettis" scored an impressive 0.62 household rating and an average audience of 615,000 viewers on Versus, MMAjunkie.com confirmed with an industry source.

The ratings figure marks the third-straight WEC event to experience a gain in viewership, and WEC 53 finishes as the seventh-highest rated event in the promotion's history.
