UFC should book ‘Batman dude’ vs. ‘Guy in the white shirt’ II
UFC ran into some more bad luck on its next Las Vegas card. Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard had to back out of their main event title fight at UFC 130. The promotion may simply want to go on a scouting mission to Las Vegas Blvd.
Check out this bizarre clash between a guy in a Batman outfit and a passer by on the Las Vegas strip. (NSFW - language).
While Batman throws with reckless abandon, "Guy in the white shirt" shows excellent poise. Once GITWS gets inside Batman's strikes, he executes a beautiful suplex and shows killer instinct with some ground and pound.

The ex-UFC middleweight fought John Ott at Titan Fighting Championships 18 and was disqualified after he threw an illegal knee in the third and final round.
But Rosholt today told MMAjunkie.com that the knee was unintentional and the fight should have been ruled a technical decision or no-contest rather than a disqualification.

Tony Ferguson explains offensive TUF outburst
On Wednesday night's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," Tony Ferguson crossed the line when in a drunken argument with castmate Charlie Rader. It started with Rader pouring water on Ferguson's head, and with the amount of alcohol and testosterone flying around, things went too far. Ferguson brought up Rader's custody problems with his son, saying, "Hit me, don't hit your son."
Ferguson discussed the incident in his post on the SB Nation MMA blog:
Why did I bring up Charlie's son? I have no idea, but I have a guess. My birth father wasn't there for me growing up. Somehow Charlie's situation mixed in with my adrenaline from fighting and the booze all worked together to bring up my own issues. I learned a lot about myself watching that on tape and how I felt about certain things in my life. I was under a lot of pressure, I was trying to bottle up frustration and it didn't work. Well, it worked for a while, but ultimately did not.
I said some things I shouldn't have said. I was in a weird place. I was having crazy dreams in that house. The entire experience took me out of my own independence and removed all of my release valves.
I really regret saying what I said to Charlie and we've talked about it since the incident. I've spoke to Clay Harvison and Chuck, too. We are in a better place now than we were that night.
In the post, Ferguson mentions that they started drinking immediately after the fights, and adrenaline was still pumping through his veins.
Every TUF castmate I've spoken to has mentioned how weird the experience is. They're in a house for six weeks with no television, books, visitors or privacy. They get to train, drink, and entertain each other. This is not to excuse Ferguson's behavior, but just to point out that this isn't a normal situation, and abnormal behavior comes out of it.

UFC 130 postfight: Bonuses, injuries, TUF 14 news, and SEAL Team 6 was at event
- Travis Browne, Gleison Tibau, Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago all received $70,000 postfight bonuses. Browne got Knockout of the Night and Tibau's rear-naked choke of Rafaello Oliveira got him Submission of the Night. Stann and Santiago were honored for Fight of the night.
- UFC 130 produced a lot of injuries. Frank Mir beat Roy Nelson easily on the scorecards, but may have suffered a broken his jaw for his efforts. Struve, Oliveira and Michael McDonald all went to the hospital as well. Stann showed up for the presser even though he suffered a broken thumb.
- The injury news of night revolved around Brock Lesnar and his battle against diverticulitis. According to UFC president Dana White, Lesnar had surgery on Friday to remove 12 inches of his colon. Amazingly, Lesnar told White he was "a little sore." The surgery went well and Camp Lesnar hopes he can return at the start of 2012. White said Lesnar will probably lose a lot of weight on a liquid diet over the next few months.
- Quinton "Rampage" Jackson elaborated on his fractured hand reference in the Octagon following his win over Matt Hamill. Jackson said he injured his left hand back in December or January in Japan. He did so when he was horsing around with a friend.
- If Jackson legitimately has a broken hand, it may cost him a shot at a fight against Jon Jones in the fall. Lyoto Machida is also in the running. White wouldn't commit to choosing an opponent for the UFC light heavyweight champ.
- There was interesting news about Season 14 of "The Ultimate Fighter." White confirmed that Jason Miller and Michael Bisping will be the coaches, but their season ending fight will not take place on pay-per-view. The fight will be part of the TUF 14 Finale that airs free on Spike.
- Stann revealed the inspiring news that members of "SEAL Team 6" were in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. The elite military operatives comprised the crew that located and killed Osama bin Laden.
- Stann was asked about future opponents and sounded offended at the suggestion that he could fight fellow military veteran Tim Kennedy in the future.
- White also revealed his dream for the future of TUF. While discussing international destinations for the show like the Philippines, White said he like to hold a season with 16 different TUF's in locations around the world. The UFC would close out the season by holding a TUF World Cup with the 16 winners.
- In Hollywood news, White confirmed that a first will go down in a new MMA movie starring Kevin James. The UFC is allowing the movie to use its name and some of its personalities including fighters, Joe Rogan and Bruce Buffer. White said he was asked to be in the movie, but turned down the offer.
- White elaborated on the Chael Sonnen situation confirming that the promotion won't be going renegade with the fighter and taking him to another state other than California. When asked why Zuffa is involved with allowing Josh Barnett, also in license limbo with California, to fight in Texas, White said, "That's not me. That's their deal." White was referencing Strikeforce management.

UFC 130 Post-Fight Bonuses Go to Browne, Stann, Santiago, Tibau
Browne's Superman punch KO of Struve earned Knockout of the Night honors at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. He was joined by Gleison Tibau for Submission of the Night and Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago for Fight of the Night. Each earned $70,000 bonuses for their performances on the card. UFC president Dana White announced the winners and bonus amounts at the post-fight press conference.
In a battle of big men, the 6-foot-7 Browne charged the 6-11 Struve late in the first round with a straight Superman punch that connected on the button, dropping the Dutch heavyweight immediately. He followed it with two shots on the ground as referee Steve Mazzagatti dove in. With the win, Browne stays unbeaten at 11-0-1. Struve's two-fight winning streak was snapped, and he drops to 21-5.
Tibau pulled off the night's only submission, stopping Rafaello Oliveira by rear naked choke in the second round. Oliveira, who returned to the UFC after a 4-0 stretch outside the promotion, took the fight on short notice when Bart Palaszewski pulled out with an injury.
And Stann and Santiago were given Fight of the Night in what was perhaps a surprise. Stann won by TKO late in the second in a fight he was dominating. It was the pay-per-view's first fight and the early candidate for Knockout of the Night, but Browne went above and beyond with his knockout of Struve. So White may have wanted to have a way to reward Stann, a military hero who got the night's biggest ovation on Memorial Day weekend.

What you need to know from this week on “The Ultimate Fighter”
If Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter" has been missing anything, it's a bit of that pizazz from Brock Lesnar's WWE days. The former WWE champ still hasn't gone back to his roots, but between Chris Cope's Ric Flair-like "wooos" and Junior dos Santos screaming "what" like he was watching "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Episode 9 felt like being at a wrestling event.
It also turned out to be about and looking past an opponent and weak excuses.
Cope is supposedly the weak link on the show, but he proved everyone wrong again by pulling the upset on Team dos Santos' No. 1 pick Shamar Bailey.
UFC president Dana White called it before the fight saying Bailey looked one-dimensional in his opening round win and was overlooking Cope. Cope wasn't exactly Mr. Aggressive, but he successfully defended against nine takedown attempts and gassed Bailey on his way to a surprising 20-18 win.
Dos Santos was shocked.
"That [decision] was terrible for me," dos Santos said. "I looked at Dana and said 'what?'"
Bailey was also in disbelief saying, "he fought well, but I don't know about that. You can't win backing up the whole time."
White seemed pleased that Cope got the decision and wasn't hearing Bailey's lame excuse during a one-on-one conversation shortly after the fight.
"I just want to let you know I took a risk," Bailey told White. "I wanted to show you I could bang and not just wrestle. I left it in the hands of the judges. I could've took the easy way out and just took him down."
White quickly pointed to Bailey that he did try to take Cope down throughout the fight and had zero success.
There was no controversy in quarterfinal fight No. 1. Knowing that Ramsey Nijem is a strong wrestler, Brock Lesnar worked with Clay Harvison on his takedown defense. Harvison was drilled hard on getting out of the clinch.
Practice didn't make perfect. He was taken down just 10 seconds into the fight. When he tried to get back up he left his back exposed. Nijem worked to get the hooks in, then flattened out Harvison before locking on a rear-naked choke. It was all over in 56 seconds.
Next week it looks like Tony Ferguson goes psycho in the TUF house. He also faces Ryan McGillivray while Zach Davis battles "Cold Steel" Chuck O'Neil.
Rampage Jackson Bucks Criticism, Says He Wants to Be Champ Again
That declaration -- "I want to be a champion again one day," for the record -- might serve to quiet some of the critics that hammered Jackson for his comments about a lack of excitement to face his UFC 130 opponent Matt Hamill.
After indicating that his career will come to an end around his 35th birthday, perhaps Jackson -- who turns 33 next month -- has begun to think about his career winding down, and setting goals for before he calls it quits. Or maybe he simply liked being the champion, and the bragging rights that it provides. Or maybe the money is simply better. Whatever the case, Jackson seemed to buck any thoughts that he is lacking in motivation for this bout and beyond.
The more you find yourself around him, the more fascinated you find yourself about what comes out of his mouth. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's insightful, and sometimes it's controversial. Some of his recent comments fell into that last category. But Jackson, who has been fighting professionally for over a decade, clarified the "excitement" remarks during a Thursday interview session.
"It's like a teacher being excited to go to the classroom every day," he said. "He's used to it. You guys may look at it differently than me, but this is my career. It's my job and what I do. I think it's weird when people think I'm not excited. I keep it real. I don't know if other fighters get excited or not. I don't know. I'm excited to be working and make a living and stuff like that, but another day, another dollar."
Jackson, in other words, said the previous comments were not an indictment on his opponent Hamill as they are a reflection of the way he approaches his career. Which is to say, it's a job first and foremost.
Part of that attitude stems from his love-hate relationship with the sport. He loves to fight, but he hates the training, the aches and pains, the early morning runs, the inability to eat the things he enjoys.
Because of that, it takes a lot to get him really amped for a fight, even if the stakes are high. He says even when he fought Chuck Liddell for the title, and Wanderlei Silva for the third time, he didn't find himself excited at the prospect. That changed last year when he faced rival Rashad Evans after the two formed an antagonistic relationship on The Ultimate Fighter.
"I really wanted to beat him and I wanted to shut his mouth," Jackson said, explaining that the match became personal more than business. " I guess thats maybe why I'm not trying to get excited anymore. I was under the impression we'd get it on and do the thing, but it turned into a boring match for the fans."
Jackson has no such animosity for Hamill, describing himself as "very impressed" with Hamill's ability to overcome his hearing disability while becoming a divisional contender.
Looking fit, lean and happy, the popular Jackson has plenty to gain with a win, as a victory may vault him into a fall date with light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones. That opportunity was likely one he didn't see coming, and so maybe one he finds more precious than he might let on. Earlier this week, he voiced regret for letting an opportunity to fight then-champ Mauricio "Shogun" Rua escape him for getting out of shape between fights, and said he was "sick and tired" of blowing up in between fights.
To that end, he and a friend recently opened a gym nearby his California home, and he plans to stay in better shape year-round to take advantage of any opportunities presented to him.
"I'm trying," he said. "I'm trying to stay in shape but I'm a lazy guy. I dread going to gym. I'd rather be at home playing video games. But I'm trying. I want to be champion again one day."

Eating baby food, abstinence and kicking butt, all part of what makes up phenom Michael McDonald
A 20-year-old shouldn't be able to walk into the UFC and compete, but that's exactly what Michael McDonald is doing. A few seconds of watching him fight and you understand why he's so advanced for his age. Speaking to him gives you an even better indicator.
With the help of RawVegas.tv, we hunted down McDonald in Las Vegas. He's a very poised, grounded kid. McDonald is spiritual and admitted that he doesn't drink or party, and he's abstinent.
McDonald faces UFC newcomer Chris Cariaso on the undercard of UFC 130. The fighters have a history with Cariaso taking out a McDonald teammate in a past fight. It was a frustrating night for McDonald who worked the corner. He wants exact a bit of revenge for his buddy. McDonald is a huge minus-300 favorite over Cariaso.

White suggests Sonnen has been punished too harshly
Chael Sonnen's career is in limbo. The confusion over how his testosterone replacement therapy was handled and reported, plus a positive test following his UFC 117 loss to Anderson Silva, has him facing an indefinite period on the sidelines. Dana White broke his silence on last week's California State Athletic Commission ruling and didn't sound pleased.
"I'm pretty bummed out about the Chael Sonnen thing and the way that the whole thing was handled. You know, this guy… I don't know if there's ever been a penalty laid down, I mean Tyson, I think when Tyson bit the ear, Tyson got a year. Um… it's pretty crazy," White told Heavy.com.
White says Sonnen's getting a raw deal.
"Um… listen, it's not that he'd have to retire, but right now was his opportunity. This kid had the opportunity to coach The Ultimate Fighter, he had the opportunity to get a big fight set up, should he win that fight… everybody knows what happened with Anderson Silva, this was a key moment in this kid's career and me, personally, you know, you've heard me say it for the last almost 11 years, we always support whatever the athletic commission says," White said. "This kid got, this kid got it stuck to him, man. He paid his dues in every way shape and forum and, uh… I think he's been treated a bit unfairly."
The CSAC denied Sonnen after his most recent attempt at regaining his license to fight. It was thought initially that Sonnen would be unable to re-apply until the summer of 2012. The CSAC admitted it misinterpreted a rule and now Sonnen can try again in late June.

Rashad Evans Responds To Jon Jones Complaints

"But its not that I think being a white boy is a bad thing, its not against white people in general. Its an insult to him because he's not white, you can see where the insult comes in. That's the extent of the insult right there - its not an insult against white people, its that he's black and I'm calling him white.

Soares clarifies: Aldo's injuries aren't new, and he never bailed on Mendes fight
That's what his manager, Ed Soares, today told MMAjunkie.com in an effort to set the record straight.
An injured Aldo, of course, recently had to push back a targeted August title fight with top contender Chad Mendes. But, Soares said, the injuries aren't new, and the champ never bailed on the Mendes fight.
MMA takes another step in N.Y. by passing again in the State Senate
MMA made strides again yesterday in New York as another bill passed through the state's senate. The N.Y. Senate voted 42-18 in favor of Bill S1707A and now it's head to the N.Y. State Assembly where it's consistently stalled in recent years.
Assemblyman Bob Reilly, D-Colonie, has led the charge in the past. The assembly session ends on June 20 with just 12 days of actual working time remaining.
It should be noted that the senate vote in favor of MMA in New York was stronger this time. In June of 2010, it only passed 32-26.
Sen. Joe Griffo, R-Rome, introduced S1707A yesterday.
"We made an attempt in the budget and it was taken out as the final agreement was put together," Griffo told the Albany Times-Union. "It's a good idea because the sport exists. It's a recognized sport, and it would generate economic activity and income for the state of New York, and allow New York State athletes to compete in their home state."
UFC owner Lorenzo Fertitta was pleased with the outcome.
"It's time to bring the fastest growing sport in the world to New York. With every passing month, our sport gets more and more popular around the country and in New York," Fertitta said in a release. "We want to thank the State Senate, and we're confident that when Assembly members take an objective look at our safety record, our popularity with their constituents, and the economic benefits and jobs we would bring to the State, they will take the same action and UFC fans will finally be able to see live UFC events in their home state."
The UFC has bolstered its efforts recently in New York by holding two press conferences at Madison Square Garden and sending fighters to Albany on several occasions in 2011. UFC light heavyweight champ Jon Jones pitched in yesterday. New York is just one of six remaining states that don't allow MMA.

UFC Versus Strikeforce Heavyweight Bouts To Make
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Now that Zuffa has purchased Strikeforce it?s safe assume that a large chunk of the Strikeforce roster will migrate over to the UFC?s octagon, where they?ll finally be showcased on the largest stage north America has to offer. As Strikeforce?s heavyweight tourney winds down, we can expect plenty of big men to join the UFC ranks, and that?s likely to make for some amazing match-ups.

Will Fedor Emelianenko ever step foot inside the octagon? Probably not, however, there?s still a wealth of heavyweight talent that will be able to test themselves inside the UFC?s confines. Check out the list below, highlighting some potential heavyweight clashes that should leave the typical MMA fan?s mouthwatering.

Brock Lesnar vs. Josh Barnett:

Assuming Lesnar makes a full recovery from his second bout with Diverticulitis; he?s got himself a great prospective match up staring him in the face: Josh Barnett. Barnett is a big, well rounded fighter who?s only lost to the best the sport has to offer. Furthermore, his body is still relatively young due to being fairly inactive since the demise of Pride Fighting Championships. Lesnar meanwhile has little fight mileage on his body as well, and he?s continuing to mature as a mixed martial artist. His athletic ability is nearly unrivaled in the sport, and while most crumble at the sheer size, power and explosiveness he brings to the cage, Barnett isn?t likely to be fazed by the big man?s credentials.

Fabricio Werdum vs. Frank Mir:

Two jiu-jitsu specialists colliding? I?ll take it. What makes this bout so interesting is the fact that Mir has tightened his overall game considerably; no longer is Frank a one dimensional fighter with a questionable gas tank. The same may not be said of Werdum: his striking still appears fairly rudimentary, he has yet to show a chin capable of absorbing significant damage and he?s been known to fade down homestretch a time or two. This fight could look a lot like Werdum?s bout with Andrei Arlovski, though I suspect we?d see either a) some highly technical jiu-jitsu on display, or b) Mir finish Werdum with a sharp shooters combination of strikes. Either way, it?s a fight I?d love to see.

Shane Carwin vs. Brett Rogers:

On one hand we?ve got Carwin, who?s got the hardest right hand in the business. On the other we?re looking at Brett Rogers, who may have the greatest resolve in the division; this is one man who just refuses to go away. Whether Carwin could perfectly place those massive mitts on Rogers? chin before he fades is a mystery in itself. If he can?t, Rogers has a serious chance of weathering the storm, and this guy is mean: he will not stop, and that could bode terribly for Shane.

Roy Nelson vs. Antonio Silva:

There?s something extremely appealing about these two massive men toing the line. Both are large, likeable personalities, and both fight their absolute hearts out. What?s most intriguing is, in terms of pure MMA skillsets, they?re remarkably similar; both possess fair striking abilities, both are durable, and both possess excellent grappling bases. Ordinarily I?d pick Silva on size alone, but to count Nelson out of a fight is absolutely absurd. It?s a coin toss fight that guarantees highly entertaining action, who wouldn?t want to see that?

Junior Dos Santos vs. Sergei Kharitonov:

Here we have two of the best punchers the division has to offer. Anyone who believes Sergei would fail to hold his own against the likes of dos Santos probably hasn?t seen many of his fights. This man comes to bang, and he?s willing to do so until someone is unconscious. While his boxing may not be quite as polished as Junior?s, he?s persistent enough to do what Roy Nelson wasn?t: get in the Brazilian?s face and land hard shots. I?d favor dos Santos in this fight, but Sergei has proven time and again he cannot be counted out.

Cain Velasquez vs. Alistair Overeem:

It?s a fight fans dream: the two most dominant heavyweights colliding on center stage. Both Velasquez and Overeem have destroyed the competition for a few years straight. Velasquez rocketed through the UFC heavyweight ranks running over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brock Lesnar in the process, while Overeem has become a multi-sport champion, tearing through the K-1 ranks, and obliterating just about every man he?s faced in MMA competition since 2007. I cannot think of a heavyweight match as anticipated as this one here. The victor would undoubtedly be recognized as the number one heavyweight the sport has to offer.

The Sunday Junkie: May 22 edition
Just the mention of the onetime UFC middleweight title challenger's name seems to inspire debate in the MMA community. And while our readers brought up a number of interesting topic in this weeks' edition of "The Sunday Junkie," Sonnen was certainly the most-discussed.
This week's winner, Dale Harris, believes Sonnen's actions were indefensible and among a growing issue in MMA. And according to Dale, it's one the UFC needs to address.

Despite leaving CBS, Johnson still on the mic for MMA bouts
When news broke that Gus Johnson was leaving CBS and his familiar post during March Madness and NFL games, I assumed that meant no more calling fights on Showtime (or CBS, if they ever decide to air fights again). CBS and Showtime are owned by the same parent company, and Johnson has done bouts on both networks for Strikeforce. I assumed wrong.
According to a report by MMA Fighting, Johnson's contract for calling NCAA basketball and NFL games with CBS ended. However, his deal with Showtime to call fights, both boxing and MMA, was a separate deal.
Michael David Smith points out that it's good to have a proponent of MMA like Johnson in the mainstream:
While HBO's lead boxing voice, Jim Lampley, rarely discusses MMA except to compare it unfavorably to boxing, Johnson spoke admiringly about MMA during Saturday night's Manny Pacquiao-Shane Mosley fight, at one point comparing and contrasting the striking styles of the two sports and noting that a punch Pacquiao threw was similar to an MMA Superman punch.
But it was Johnson who uttered a phrase that was incredibly damaging to the sport. During the melee after Strikeforce's event in Nashville last April, Johnson said, "These things happen in MMA," when nothing can be further from the truth.
After fights, cages are normally areas of respect and appreciation. Melees like that are extremely rare. Baseball and basketball have more dirty moves and fights than MMA, but Johnson didn't point that out. He made it sound like fighters can't stop fighting when the bell rings, but had no evidence to back up that claim.
That was during a CBS broadcast, when people with no prior exposure to MMA had a chance to see the sport for free. Nick Diaz and Jason "Mayhem" Miller deserve the brunt of the blame for the melee, but they both served suspensions and paid fines. Miller wasn't allowed back on Showtime, and sat out for more than a year before being signed by the UFC. But Johnson continues to call fights, despite his poor reaction to an odd event.
Do you like Johnson's fight commentary, or would you rather see him stick to basketball and football?
