Strikeforce Challenger Series 15 weigh-in results

Justin Wilcox is looking to continue to climb up the ranks of the lightweight division in Strikeforce, and he’s close to becoming one of the top products in the organization.
Currently riding a five-fight win streak, with four of those wins coming under the Strikeforce banner, Wilcox earned arguably the biggest win of his career [...]

UFC Fight Night 24: Anthony Johnson Beats Dan Hardy

by Michael David SmithAnthony Johnson is back in the Octagon after an absence of more than a year, and he looks great.

Johnson, who had been sidelined since 2009 with a knee injury, stepped up and destroyed former No. 1 welterweight contender Dan Hardy Saturday at UFC Fight Night 24.

For Johnson, it was a big win that shows that when he's healthy and in shape, he's a force to be reckoned with at 170 pounds. For Hardy, the showed, a year after he lost his welterweight title fight to Georges St. Pierre, that he still doesn't have much in the way of takedown defense or ability to fight off his back. Any good wrestler is going to give Hardy problems until he shores up those weaknesses.

Michael Bisping Discusses Controversy, Wants Sonnen Next, Blasts Marquardt

Imagine the world-class trash talk that would be generated if Michael Bisping and Chael Sonnen got together. Are you smiling at the possibility? Well, it could very well happen. It's the fight that Sonnen wants, and now, it's apparently the bout that Bisping wants as well.

In a Monday appearance on The MMA Hour, Bisping voiced a hope that he will next be matched up with the former No. 1 contender.

"I want to fight Chael Sonnen because No. 1, he's an amazing fighter," Bisping said. "When he fought last, he looked fantastic, and I want to challenge myself. He's the No. 2 ranked middleweight in the world. Obviously I can't fight No. 1 because he's got a title shot, so I want to fight the No. 2 guy."

Brit writer says ‘biased’ American media is out to lynch Bisping

Following his resounding victory at UFC 127, Michael Bisping got himself in hot water by spitting at the corner of Jorge Rivera. The British middleweight was vilified by most of the MMA media and fans. That's sent The Telegraph's MMA expert Gareth Davies into a tizzy.

Davies suggests the American media is out to get Bisping, saying there was no balance to the stories written when both Chael Sonnen and Nate Marquardt called him out.

First we had Chael Sonnen, hardly a Saint himself, allowed to attack the Manchester middleweight with impunity. Where was the balance here from the US mainstream media covering MMA? Sonnen wrote UFC matchmaker Joe Silva an open letter, asking for a fight with Bisping. Fair enough. How did theUS MMA media respond ? They wrote it up ignoring any of Sonnen'smisdemeanours in the sport. Balance ? None of it. But don't let the facts get in the way of a witchhunt.

From atop of his high horse, 'Nate the Great' added that Bisping's actions are unbecoming of a martial artist and were unsportsmanlike. No argument there, the spitting was utterly wrong, but am I really the only one who sees the irony here ?

Am I the only member of the media who can recall this same Marquardtbringing home his own illegal knee to a downed opponent just two years ago ?It was againstWilson Gouveia [CORRECTION: It was Thales Leites at UFC 85]. Am I also the only one to recallMarquardt followed that foul up with an illegal strike to the back of the head later in the fight? I know. I was there watching it live. Didn'tMarquardt himself bringthe sport into disrepute ? by testing positive for steroids on his UFC debut…

Davies calls me out for Cagewriter's Marquardt story.

Frankly that's no big deal. Davies and I have differing opinions on what to write in story that's simply reporting one fighter's quote about another. I don't believe the story needed to analyze whether Marquardt had the right to rip another fighter.

GAD assumes there's some anti-Bisping agenda. Funny things is, I may have the softest stance in the entire MMA media with regards to Bisping's future.

During Iole's appearance on ESPNRadio1100 following the incident on Mar. 1, I argued that the Bisping knee wasn't intentional and the spitting is something happens in the heat of the moment. I outright scoffed at the possibility of the middleweight being fired, but if some of the British media and Bisping want to believe it's them against the world - good deal, it makes for a fun storyline for the future.

UFC 132 shaping up: Faber plans to beat ‘not that cool’ Cruz

Urijah Faber is a great fighter, but let's face it his trash talk stinks. "The California Kid" is trying really hard when it comes to Dominick Cruz but he's too nice to tear into the UFC bantamweight champ.

"People are always asking 'why don't you like him?' there's a bunch of little things, but the bottomline is, I just don't he's that cool," Faber said (1:20 mark).

Faber said Cruz shouldn't be upset by that.

"I'm just being honest dude. That's the way it is," Faber said. "Get the chip off your shoulder. Who cares what I think? You're a UFC world champion, You're a young guy, you're good looking. You got the title for another four months before I swipe it from you, and life is good."

Wait a second. What happened to the trash talk? You're good looking? Come on Urijah.

That's Faber in a nutshell. He's too nice to really smash Cruz, but make no mistake, Faber really dislikes the dude. The banter leading up to the fight should intensify during the early summer.

Faber versus Cruz is the headliner at UFC 132 on July 2nd in Las Vegas. It's lining up as a pretty deep card.

UFC will show five UFN 24 fights on Facebook

Dana White says the future of sports viewing is on the Internet. The UFC must feel great about its recent Facebook broadcasts because for Ultimate Fight Night 24 this Saturday in Seattle, it's expanding the coverage on the social networking site.

Viewers will see at least four bouts on Spike (10 p.m. ET/PT), but with a deep card, there was a good chance avid fans of MMA were getting shutout of watching some excellent matchups on the eight-fight non-televised undercard. The promotion has gone a long way in trying to deliver those fights by promising to show five of them on the Ultimate Fighting Championship Facebook page (7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT).

Alex "Bruce Leroy" Caceres vs. Mackens Semerzier
Jon Madsen vs. Mike Russow
John Hathaway vs. Kris McCray
Michael McDonald vs. Edwin Figueroa
Sean McCorkle vs. Christian Morecraft

The UFC began showing undercard fights on Facebook at Fight for the Troops 2 in January. It was a smart move by the promotion. The free view on Facebook is a great way to build interest in young fighters. The cost certainly has to be minimal in comparison to carving out a three or four hour block on television.

Tompkins interview: Hard feelings in camps and no future with Belfort

MMA trainer is really no different than being a head coach in any other sport. Different fighters need to be handled differently and when there's a beef between teammates someone has to be the boss. Shawn Tompkins knows what Greg Jackson is going through right now. Jackson's Submissions Fighting appears to be splintering a bit over the Rashad Evans-Jon Jones fight.

At TapouT Las Vegas, Tompkins joined me to talk about camp politics. He was also forthcoming about one of his old students Vitor Belfort, saying he'll never work with the UFC middleweight title contender again.

UFC Fight Night 24 medical suspensions: Michael McDonald out indefinitely

Michael McDonald got way more of a fight than he bargained for at UFC Fight Night 24, and his doctor bill is likely to reflect that.

White lukewarm on GSP-Silva, now calling it a ‘fantasy’ fight

Because things change quickly in the world of mixed martial arts, it's never smart to book a fight nine months in advance. The possibility of a Georges St. Pierre-Anderson Silva clash has gone from very likely six weeks ago to Dana White calling it a "fantasy" fight on Saturday.

Around UFC 126, the UFC president sounded pretty certain he'd finally be putting together the superfight between his welterweight and middleweight champions.

After UFC 128, it looks like the fight has been put on the backburner.

"This fight isn't happening," White said. "It's not a fight yet. It's still a big fantasy fight. There are still things that need to happen in the meantime before we sit down and discuss where this fight would be, what weight it would be at, how it would work. It's all just fantasy yet.

"I literally have not talked to Georges St-Pierre or Anderson Silva about this fight."

GSP echoed those sentiments when he spoke with Cagewriter two weeks ago.

"[...] It's a complete re-orientation of my career. People are saying crazy stuff: 'Oh, he just has to gain 30 pounds and take the fight and fight him in three months.' I can't get 30 pounds in three months. It would take a lot more than that, if I want to go up in weight class," said St. Pierre. "Plus, Silva fights at light heavyweight as well. So he walks around at … he's probably 40 pounds heavier than I am. So if I fight this fight, it might be at a catch weight. If it happens."

Now that the UFC has purchased Strikeforce, that's an even bigger if.

The UFC opened discussions with Strikeforce's former owners starting in December, but when White talked about the superfight possibility at UFC 126, he couldn't have known less than six weeks later, he'd have his pick of the Strikeforce welterweight and middleweight divisions.

Strikeforce's 170 class may not be deep, but it does have a guy in Nick Diaz, who should certainly get a shot at GSP, if the champ gets by Jake Shields at UFC 129 in late April.

The common thought is that Silva has cleaned out the middleweight division. That's utter nonsense. He's got plenty of intriguing fights at 185. Chael Sonnen deserves another shot and if Wanderlei Silva, can stay healthy and get some wins under his belt, that's a mega-fight as well. There's also Yushin Okami and what happens if Michael Bisping keeps piling up wins? The Strikeforce roster also has a few intriguing matchups for Silva led by Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza, Tim Kennedy and Dan Henderson.

Marquardt looks forward to ‘punching Bisping in the mouth’

There isn't a more thoughtful, docile guy in MMA than Nate Marquardt, but when it comes to Michael Bisping, he sounds like just about every other UFC middleweight.

Marquardt, who's been on the verge of a title shot for the last three years, wants a piece of the Brit.

"I would love to fight that guy, just to punch him in his mouth and shut him up. He's an ass," Marquardt told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole. "He's a total punk, no respect. I don't like those kinds of people."

The spitting incident at UFC 127 pushed Marquardt over the edge.

"The crap-talking, whatever, that's one thing. Guys do things to hype up fights. And even guys who are just like that naturally, I don't hold that against them. But the fact that he goes and spits on an opponent's corner, that's so disrespectful," Marquardt said. "That's just not what a martial artist does and it's not what a sportsman does."

This kind of talk is completely out of character for Marquardt.

"I'd say 90, 95 percent of the time I like my opponents," Marquardt said. "I've always thought he was kind of an ass. He says disrespectful stuff, but the spitting is just a step farther, or two steps too far. It was horrible."

He still doesn't understand what sent Bisping into such a rage.

"It's one thing, the pre-fight stuff. Those are just words. They're not threats, they're not crossing the line. Making fun of his accent is something I would do to my buddy. It's not that big of a deal. Going around spitting on someone, I don't know," said Marquardt.

Marquardt has to take care of business first on Saturday against Dan Miller at UFC 128. Miller is filling in for Yoshihiro Akiyama.

Bisping's status is in limbo right now. The UFC plans on disciplining the Brit, but no official word has come down on whether that means he's kept away from the Octagon for any significant length of time.

Bellator 38 results: Hale (inverted triangle), Carpenter, Linderman, M'Pumbu advance

In what would prove to be the third major upset of the evening, Tim Carpenter scored a victory over Daniel Gracie and advanced past the opening round of Bellator Fighting Championships' first-ever light-heavyweight tournament.

The bout headlined Bellator 38, which featured all four of the eight-man tournament's quarterfinal matchups.

The night, though, was memorable for two other reasons: Bellator's second-ever inverted-triangle choke - and a woeful performance by the night's officials.
