What you need to know from this week on 'The Ultimate Fighter'

On this week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," we have one episode, but two fights. What does that mean? You'll have to read on to find out.

Good problem to have of the week: With their first win, Team Koscheck is stressed about how to pick the next fight. They see it as a bad but good situation.

Under your skin of the week: Team GSP is very upset by the way Team Koscheck has celebrated their win. Koscheck and the coaches stopped by and picked on Michael Johnson, who was clearly ticked off by it. Somehow, these fighters don't get that getting mad about it is exactly what Koscheck wants.

Voice of reason of the week: Georges St. Pierre sat his team down and told them not to let Team Koscheck's antics get under their skin. That makes sense ... so clearly, that advice won't be followed.

Trash talk guessing game No. 1 -- Who said:

I just go out there and kick and punch and knee.

I'm not like these other guys that he's fought.

I want him to feel pain.

First fight of the week: Cody McKenzie (Team GSP) vs. Marc Stevens (Team Koscheck)

Round 1: Stevens shoots in for a quick takedown and McKenzie sinks in his trademark guillotine. Stevens is put to sleep, and Koscheck is clearly disgusted.

After the fight, the Stevens locker room is dead silent. Koscheck had no explanation to offer his fighters, and they had to head in to the gym for the next fight announcement. Team GSP had control, and they put up their fighter Jonathan Brookins against Sevak Magakian. GSP calls Brookins his secret weapon. In case you're unfamiliar with Brookins' work -- which maybe GSP was -- he is one of the many fighters that Jose Aldo destroyed on the way to the WEC championship.

Stupid prank of the week: "Ahhh, Josh, where you put my sandals?" Koscheck hid GSP's sandals, which is the one of the weakest pranks in the history of "The Ultimate Fighter."

Trash talk guessing game No. 2 -- Who said:

I want to go up, like flowers to the sun.

This is like, win or die, man.

Second fight of the week: Jonathan Brookins (Team GSP) vs. Sevak Magakian (Team Koscheck)

Round 1: Brookins earned the first cheer of the fight when he supplexed Magakian down to the ground. Though Magakian stood up quickly, Brookins stayed on his back. After some maneuvering, he sunk in a standing rear naked choke and put Magakian to sleep.

Body count of the week: Two fights, two fighters put to sleep. Team GSP took both fights this week, leaving one last fight for Team Koscheck to try to dig out of the hole next week.

Jesus, We Were Right; Randy Says He May Consider Fighting Again if He's Offered More 'Novelty Fights'

Following UFC 121 Saturday night, Randy Couture joined the MMA Live Panel to talk about the card and to discuss his fighting future. Part of the segment aired last night on MMA Live's broadcast in which Randy discussed whether or not we have seen the last of him inside the Octagon.

"No, I don't think I'm going to make any public announcements [about whether or not I'm retiring] because I don't think anybody's going to buy it. I did that once and came back," the 47-year-old said. "I don't want to be like Brett [Favre], you know, but  I do feel like I've had my wars, I've had my battles, I've been there, I've done that."

He makes some good points abut knowing when to call it quits, but what may be the most surprising to fans is that Couture only seems interested in taking novelty bouts. We made mention of this trend by Randy during the last episode of The Bum Rush, but the point was likely overshadowed by the news that Dana White is going to fuck Ben over. It was a prediction we made that we secretly hoped wouldn't come true, but sadly, it looks like it's coming to fruition.

“I am competing and training and feel better than I ever felt physically, but, you know I don't see myself making another run at the title -- at heavyweight or light-heavyweight, being honest. I think at some point, I've got to call enough, enough. You know, I've had an amazing year. My last two fights, in honesty were more novelty fights," Couture explained. "Not to take anything away from my opponents, but that's the truth of the matter. They didn't really matter in the division, they didn't  put me closer to a title and, you know I have to make a decision at some point. So I think I would entertain another novelty-type fight. I can still compete, but I don't see myself making a run at the title any time soon."

Jake Shields grapples his way to a split decision at UFC 121

Jake Shields debut in the UFC was not flashy, but it got the job done as he won the split decision over Martin Kampmann at UFC 121. The judges saw the fight 28-29, 30-27, 29-28 for Shields in Anaheim on Saturday.

As expected, Shields took Kampmann down quickly to start the fight, and worked diligently there until the final minute of the round. Shields used leg kicks to keep Kampmann from closing the distance, and tried for another takedown as the round ended.

Shields continued to show his grappling game in the second round, controlling Kampmann on the ground. Kampmann was able to inflict some damage, twice hitting Shields in the face with knees while the two were clinched up. But when on the ground, Shields ruled the round, passing Kampmann's guard with ease. Shields slowed his pace in this round.

A gassed Shields had trouble getting Kampmann to the ground in the final round. When it finally happened, Shields continued to outgrapple Kampmann, but the pace of the fight was slow. Kampmann never really was able to take control of the fight away from Shields, and didn't unload in stand-up as he is able to do.

Though Shields, the Strikeforce middleweight champ who vacated his belt to sign with the UFC, had fought at welterweight in the past, his last fights for Strikeforce were at middleweight with last welterweight bout was in 2008 against Paul Daley. The cut down to welterweight appeared to be a bad one, because he had no problem fighting for five rounds in his April title defense with Dan Henderson.

Shields was supposed to be guaranteed a title shot with a win over Kampmann, but this bout raises two questions. One, was the win good enough to earn the title shot, and two, can Shields fight at 170 lbs.?

Can any MMA stars golf? Strikeforce fighters swing the sticks for charity

There's a reason Phil Mickelson doesn't fight. Just look at him. All kidding aside, it's probably more of a socioeconomic thing to explain why some athletes are drawn to golf and others choose to fight. The two worlds came together on Monday during a charity golf tournament in Northern California. Strikeforce fighters hit the links to raise money for Turning Wheels for Kids. The cause collected funds to get underprivileged kids bicycles. Former fighter and Showtime announcer Frank Shamrock explained nicely:

"Here's what I remember about being a kid. I was on welfare, I was poor and I stole every bike I every got," joked Shamrock on this cool video (NSFW).

"Because it was the only way I could get out of my house and get out into my community. A bike is the tool to connect to your community. What we do with Turning Wheels is we give that connection and we give him a bike. We show him there's a different way."

Strikeforce fighters Scott Smith, Daniel Cormier, Josh Thomson and Luke Rockhold were on hand along with Shamrock and CEO Scott Coker.

Cormier needs a little work on his game. The rising heavyweight prospect almost killed a few dummies who parked in front of a tee. With that swing, he might be better suited for some rooftop golf with the head honchos from the UFC. Smith hit some nice shots and there was a even a dreaded media guy, Greg Savage, showing off a slight bit of athletic aptitude (1:10 mark).

UFC heavyweight Jon Madsen's plan: no more boring fights

There's little question Jon Madsen's UFC career has been a trial by fire.

The UFC heavyweight had three professional fights under his belt and an amateur wrestling victory over Brock Lesnar when he joined the cast of "The Ultimate Fighter 10."

Madsen picked up some new skills on the reality show, but when it came time to fight under the bright lights, he understandably went back to his wrestling roots.

Bobby Voelker TKOs Roger Bowling at Strikeforce Challengers

by Michael David SmithRoger Bowling was supposed to be one of the young up-and-coming stars of the Strikeforce Challengers Series, but Bobby Voelker had other ideas.

Voelker brutalized Bowling with ground and pound in the second round of their fight on Friday night, forcing the referee to step in and hand Voelker a technical knockout victory.

Bowling put on a great show in beating Voelker by technical decision in May, but that fight ended in controversy when Voelker accidentally poked Bowling in the eye, and Strikeforce wanted to pair the two up again and get a more decisive ending. As it turned out, it was Voelker who got the decisive victory.

Spike TV, please give us UFC events live

Spike TV ran Saturday's UFC 120 event on tape delay, something they've done every time they've aired an event that took place in Europe. As a result, the news of Dan Hardy getting knocked out and Bisping and Akiyama's fight of the night had already traveled across the pond before fans here could see it. It's time for Spike to respect the UFC's American fans and air the shows live.

It's not like Spike didn't air UFC programming anyway. While live fights were happening across the pond, Spike chose to air a marathon of "UFC Unleashed." So, instead of showing live fights mixed in with the taped fights of "Unleashed," they showed taped fights followed by taped fights. How is this a winning programming strategy?

Spike also has plenty of experience working with the UFC to produce live events, considering that Ultimate Fight Nights air live on Spike. If Spike's excuse was that they didn't want to compete with other sporting events, Saturday night was not a good time to air the show. The fights had to compete with the MLB playoffs and college football.

Fans shouldn't have to worry about trying to stay spoiler-free, and media shouldn't have to choose between illegally streaming the fights or waiting until they air to report the results. Spike should use common sense and air the fights when they are happening.
